I've always aspired to be connected to my food. Growing up, we hunted, fished, foraged for morels, bought sweet corn and tomatoes from the farmer over the hill, and produce occasionally showed up from the gardens of friends. Sourcing food, as well as preparing it, was done with love and always shared.  In my adult life, I try to continue these traditions.

Throughout the countryside of Southern Indiana, you'll discover farm stands with fresh produce directly from farmers, gardeners, and friendly neighbors, always on the honor system, unmanned, and stocked based on the current harvest and the person who tends it.

 

These photographs are snapshots from countryside drives with my wife. Some stands are destinations we return to year after year, and others are encounters we discover on a drive. We have seasonal routes we can rely on for tomatoes and sweet corn in the summer, pumpkins and persimmons in the fall, and if you ask who has the best eggs, you'll have to specify chicken or quail.
