An almanac is a record of the rhythm of seasons. It documents the arrivals and departures, the labor and the waiting, the way light changes over the same hill. This is a photographic almanac of Creekbend Vineyard, a hilltop property with limestone-rich soil in Monroe County, Indiana, where Bill Oliver planted grapes in 1994 and shaped the character of Indiana winemaking for three decades.​

 

From 2020 to 2022, I visited the vineyard through every season, photographing the cycles of viticulture and the winemakers engaged in the process. I got to experience some of it beside Bill, and even ride in his hot air balloon. I witnessed budbreak and growth, canopy work and lab work, the harvest and crush, the cellar where the wine was aging, and the cold months when the vines were bare. The photographs are organized as a cycle, not a narrative: a record of recurring things.

When I started photographing, I didn't know this record would come to mark an ending — not just of a season, but of the vineyard itself. What was made during my two years and countless visits has become, in retrospect, a record of something that has since closed, and a quiet farewell to the vineyard and to a chapter of Bill Oliver's life.
